What we are doing:

  • Peace Festival

    • Organized and run by Student Council

  • High School Hacks

    • Session 1: 25 8th graders; 5 volunteers (Lamar, HSPVA, Carnegie, and two Lanier educators)

    • Session 2: 15 8th graders; volunteers from Belair, DeBakey, and Carnegie with Ms. Maja

  • Sandwich University (Rice University Partnership) – 400 sandwiches made in 2 under 30 minutes events

  • Monthly Writing Competitions – Supported by Mr. Garrett; judged by three volunteer teachers

  • Music Mondays – Student performers and curated (by students) playlists

  • PNN – Student News network project

  • Sneakerball – Dance following the Peace Festival

  • 100-Year Merchandise – Shirts and hats designed by students

  • Field Day – Potential collaboration with the PTO's Winter Festival (sports + booths)

  • February Fundraiser - A sale of art and food to raise money for the arts program at our school

  • Readathon – Day dedicated to nonstop reading

  • Talent Show - Auditorium event by the end of May for students to share their talents

  • Book Speed Dating – Short genre samplings in the library to help students discover their reading preferences

  • Take a Book, Leave a Book Library – Mini outdoor library at school entrance

  • Medical Talk Assembly – Doctors from Methodist, Baylor, etc. speaking on substance effects

  • School Garden – Student-managed garden project

  • Time Capsule – A schoolwide legacy project

  • April Book Drive – Collect gently used books for shelters & partner schools

  • Helpful Helpers Program – Student volunteers assist classmates with injuries

  • Bilingual Support Program – Extra English help sessions in the library for bilingual students

  • Female Product Dispensers – Install long-stored dispensers in girls' restrooms

  • Peace Festival 

  • Black History Month & Women’s History Month Events – Performances, music, slam poetry, and art collaborations

  • Website Coordination – Partner with PTO to manage the Purple Pups page; maintain Peace Fest site; add PNN section

  • Lunchtime Science Tutoring – Taken over by Mr. Slaugenwhite

What we did last year:

  • Peace Festival Awards ceremony (ran it)

  • High school orientation seminar

  • Revamping front foyer international flags

  • Student Council Peace Fest booth

  • Black History Month daily announcements 

  • Established a Ramadan safe space for fasting students

  • Posted Student Council student survey

  • Created a Student Council in November of 2024 with 759 votes for 35 candidates
